What DTF Printing Actually Costs (and When It Beats Screen Printing)
DTF printing is the reason a 12-piece order with a full-color design stopped being a bad idea. It carries no setup fee and no color limit, which inverts the cost logic most buyers learned from screen printing.
That doesn't make it cheaper across the board. It makes it cheaper in a specific range, and understanding where that range starts and ends will save you real money. This is one of four methods worth comparing - our full comparison of decoration methods covers all of them side by side.
Why DTF pricing works differently
Screen printing costs are front-loaded. Before a single shirt is printed, someone separates the art, burns a screen for each color, registers the screens on press, and mixes ink. That's real setup labor on every color, plus press time, and it happens whether you're printing 20 shirts or 2,000.
DTF has none of that. The design is printed onto film, powdered, cured, and pressed. A one-color design and a fourteen-color photograph take the same amount of setup work: none.
So the two methods have fundamentally different cost curves:
- Screen printing starts high and drops steeply as quantity rises
- DTF starts low and stays roughly flat
They cross. Where they cross depends almost entirely on how many colors are in your artwork.
Where the crossover happens
Rough guidance, before we quote your specific job:

Read the pattern rather than the specific numbers: every color you add pushes the crossover point higher. Each additional color is another screen, another setup charge, another registration step for screen printing - and costs DTF nothing at all.
This is why the old rule of thumb ("screen printing is cheaper") misleads people. It was formed when most designs were one or two colors. For a six-color design at 60 pieces, DTF usually wins comfortably, and a shop that only runs screens won't tell you that.
What actually drives your DTF price
Print size. This is the main variable. DTF is priced largely by the square inch of film consumed, so a left-chest logo costs meaningfully less than a full back print. If budget is tight, shrinking the print is the most effective lever you have - more effective than changing garments.
Number of print locations. Each location is a separate press cycle. Front and back roughly doubles the decoration cost.
Garment cost. Unchanged by method. A $4 blank and a $22 blank cost the same to decorate.
Quantity. Some volume efficiency exists - we gang multiple designs onto shared film - but the curve is shallow. Don't expect the dramatic per-piece drops screen printing delivers.
Not a factor: color count. Worth repeating, because buyers routinely simplify artwork to save money on a DTF job. Don't. It saves you nothing.
Where DTF is the obvious choice
Small runs. Under 24 pieces, setup fees dominate everything else and DTF usually wins outright.
Complex artwork. Photographs, gradients, watercolor effects, detailed illustration. Screen printing simulates these through halftones - possible, expensive, and rarely as clean.
Mixed garment orders. Same design across tees, hoodies, and performance polos in one order. DTF bonds to all of them without re-tooling.
Reorders and fills. Ran out of XLs? Reprinting 8 shirts by screen means paying setup again. DTF just runs the 8.
Sampling before committing. Produce two or three real samples for approval, then move to screen printing for the production run if quantity justifies it. Cheap insurance against a 500-piece mistake.
Dark performance fabrics. DTF lays down a white underbase automatically and bonds well to polyester, avoiding some of the dye migration headaches screen printing runs into on athletic wear.
Where DTF isn't the answer
Large simple runs. 500 shirts, one-color logo - screen printing will beat DTF substantially. Not close.
Caps, bags, and structured items. Heat pressing needs a flat surface. Embroidery is the right method there, and we cover when it's worth the premium.
When hand-feel matters most. DTF leaves a thin film layer. Modern DTF is far softer than the transfers of a decade ago, but a waterbased screen print on a soft cotton tee still feels better. On a large front print, some people notice.
All-over prints. Edge-to-edge coverage through seams requires dye sublimation.
Maximum-durability applications. DTF holds up well under normal home laundry. For garments facing industrial laundering or years of daily wear, embroidery or sublimation last longer.
Getting the price down
Four levers, in order of effectiveness:
- Shrink the print. Biggest cost driver, most negotiable. A 10-inch back print costs noticeably more than an 8-inch one, and at eight inches most people can't tell the difference on a worn garment.
- Consolidate locations. One well-designed front print often does more work than a front-and-back combination that costs 80% more.
- Combine orders. Three departments ordering separately in the same month is three jobs. Combined, we gang the designs onto shared film and everyone pays less.
- Don't simplify the art. Counterintuitive and worth stating plainly - color reduction saves money on screen printing and nothing at all on DTF. Keep the good version of your logo.
The straight answer
DTF is the right call under roughly 50 pieces, or any time the artwork is genuinely complex. Screen printing takes over above roughly 100 pieces with simple art. In between, it depends on your specific color count and print size, and it's worth having someone run both numbers.
